The skill of your instructor and working together as a team in the boat will enable you to tackle some of the best white water in Scotland. Tough, exhilarating and unforgettable, be warned, you will get wet!!!!
The River Tay is located in highland Perthshire and flows eastwards towards the sea at Dundee. You have the option of half or full day trips along this outstanding river.
Aberfeldy, Grantully – half day – River Tay - £30.00 This trip lasts for 6 miles and starts from the old market town of Aberfeldy. Here the river winds lazily along the Tay Valley, through rolling hills and stunning scenery. This is an area with diverse wildlife, which can be seen from the river. The paddle crew has ample opportunity to practice their new rafting skills before the river drops down to Grantully Rapids such as “Zoom Flume” and the “Washing Machine” to keep you on your toes. Grantully Rapid is where the trip ends. This is the longest rapid on the river and provides surprises for you. On the River Tay the minimum age is 8 and no upper age limit. Participants do not have to be able to swim but need to be confident in moving water.
Stanley, Thistle Brig – half day – River Tay - £25.00 This trip lasts for 4 miles and is equally good in low water levels as it is when the river is running high. Exciting rapids make this trip an ideal introduction to the sport of white water rafting. Stanley is just north of the city of Perth, “the fair city”. The river is lined with trees and dotted sandy beaches and usually the water here is warmer than it is upstream. Rapids like “The Weir” and “Hell Hole Corner” make your trip a memorable one.
Kenmore, Grantully – full day – River Tay - £40.00 From autumn through to early summer this is a very popular choice. Some twelve miles of upper Tay is covered starting at the village of Kenmore. This is the entrance to the river from Loch Tay, one of Scotland’s longest lochs. Easy rapids soon appear and give the paddle crews a taste of things to come further down the river. Rapids give way to farmland but with rugged mountains like Ben Lawers and Schiehallion as a backdrop. You break for lunch, which can be provided, on the riverbank at Aberfeldy before continuing downstream to Grantully.
The River Tummel – half day - £30.00 Situated north of Pitlochry, the River Tummel is like no other in Scotland. The experience will get you working together to help the guide take the raft from beautiful deep pools down through technical rapids such as “Sharks Tooth”, “The Narrows” and “Zig and Zag” the main part of the trip is graded 2-3 preparing you for the grand finale – a two tier 18ft drop (Grade 4) into the mystical Loch Faskally where you float away from the falls towards home, reflecting upon its power and beauty.
The River Orchy – full day - £50.00 Situated in the heart of the Grampian Mountains, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of city life lies Glen Orchy. This is a tranquil little glen, surrounded by steep, rugged mountains. River Orchy in the summer is a gentle trickle, but add typical Scottish weather from September onwards and the trickle grows into a raging torrent. This is rafting at its best – a “full on” alpine style river that has no respect for anyone daring to travel along its twisting path. Anyone wanting to raft this river must be able to move at fairly short notice to take advantage of the best possible conditions. The Orchy is usually runnable from September through to late March, as water levels change rapidly. This river is not for the faint hearted. Minimum age is 18, participants must be able to swim and be confident in fast moving water and a sense of adventure is essential.
What equipment will I need? All the technical equipment is provided by Wild Spirits, in accordance with the I.R.F. Regulations (International Rafting Federation). This includes long john wet suit, spray jacket, buoyancy aid and helmet. All you have to bring is a woollen/fleecy jumper for inclement weather, swimming costume/shorts and a towel (no cotton clothing to be worn on the river).
